Scattered Thoughts

Where America could go from here

Michael Green is a very smart guy and a very good writer, deep, but clear, simple, and direct. This is a good long essay about the American Dream, what was novel in it and how it developed, where it stands now and what its prospects are.

Is Green right, in his analysis, in his prognosis? I don't know. In a very real sense I don't care at this point, because I have no skin in the game, the fallout will take much more than ten years to be realized and so I won't be around to deal with the effects. I can't even say: yes, this is right, it matches with my understanding, or perhaps teaches something. Deciding that would cost me time and effort, a project there is no point in me undertaking at this late date.

But there are several good takes in this essay, ways of understanding how American history unfolded, that are new to me and gave me opportunities to ponder, to rethink what I thought I knew, to consider things I'd never considered at all. How much more can I ask of an essay?
