If I have the time, just do the thing
This is a more aspirational version of the previous thought, but very much a follow-on from it. As I age there are fewer things I need to do, and thus at any given moment there is little or nothing, aside from sheer laziness, to compete with just doing the thing in front of me.
I like how one Redditor puts it: "If you can do it in 30 seconds, just do it. A huge amount of little stuff can pile up quickly and then feel ominous everywhere you look. Put the pen back in the drawer. Send the one line email. Put the peanut butter away."
Since my wife died and I took charge of the household this has just happened for me naturally. I wash the dishes by hand right after using them. I put them up next time I pass through the kitchen. I put the peanut butter away. I notice the counter needs wiping and I wipe it. I see something on the floor and put it where it goes, in the trash or back in its place. I immediately toss things I know I'll never use, pieces of mail or boxes or containers or any mysterious thing that will become clutter if I leave it till next time.
I even look around sometimes for five or ten minute jobs to do, just for the satisfaction of doing something. A lot has gotten done as a result.
This is way different than how things used to be, when things (objects, tasks) just piled up until I finally had to take a shovel to them.
